11 Things to Do to Get Your Baby to Sleep While Travelling in a Plane

Travelling in a plane with a toddler can be a nightmare for a lot of parents as their sleeping schedule is likely to be disturbed. So let me share with you some tips that I found really useful when I used to travel with my toddler.

  1. Request for a bassinet/basket for new-born to sleep in. Most airplanes have this facility available but would require that the baby be removed during turbulence.
  1. Travel in the night – making it easier for the child to sleep as per their schedule. They wake up at their regular time thus making it easier for them to get through the entire day.
  1. Inform your child of the changes that are likely to happen the next couple of days.
  1. Mimic their food timings just like it is at home.
  1. The mother or the care giver needs to be settled in comfortably. Make sure you are comfortable first.  If the baby senses any agitating behavior on their end, it affects the child.
  1. Bring their blanket or toy – stuff they are comfortable with while sleeping. Mimic their bed setting as it was home. I remember my son had a favorite blanket. We would carry that around whenever we were travelling. I guess probably the smell and the feel of the blanket made him very comfortable and it would immediately calm him down and make him sleepy.
  1. Read to them. Engage them in stories.
  1. Sing out loud for them.
  1. The more comfortable the child is, the easier it will be for them to go to bed, in a plane.
  1. If taking a day flight, book tickets in a way that the lay overs are long. So, the kid can move around freely in between flights.
  1. Ensure to dress them in pajamas, just like you would at home. The clothes should not be tight, but free enough to move around in.
