Doctor I’m a first time parent and I am  a little anxious too. I would like to know what is the right temperature of the water for my baby’s bath?

Hi Amritha,

A baby’s skin is around 20-30% thinner than an adult’s. Therefore it is important to have the bathwater temperature just right. A bath temperature of 98.6°F (between 37°C and 38°C) is best for most babies. This is an ideal temperature which helps the baby feel relaxed, as it may remind them of the mother’s womb.

To ensure that the temperature is right, the following tips may be useful:

  • Always check the water temperature, before gently introducing the baby in.
  • Never turn on the tap or run the water while your baby is in the bath. A sudden burst of hot water could cause burns.
  • Check the water temperature by dipping in your hand or an elbow. A baby bath thermometer can also be used.
  • Finish bathing your baby quickly, before the water begins to cool.
