Hello Doctor, do you think the” time out “strategy works with kids? My kid is really getting out of control and we are finding it hard. So would like to have your opinion.

Hi Aditya,

A time-out strategy is indeed more effective than yelling, screaming, threatening or physical means like spanking. It gives sufficient time for the parent and child to cool down. It has also been proven to be effective in decreasing various problem behaviors (e.g., temper tantrums, not minding, hitting, etc.). Remember to not give the kids any attention while in timeout, but remember to stay close enough to know if they are doing anything dangerous or try to leave the time-out chair/spot.
